Junior Accountant-Entry Level

Our client, a prominent Health Authority is seeking a full-time Junior Accountant for their Finance group. Reporting to the Manager, Finance & Operations, the incumbent is responsible for the preparation and analysis of Financial Statements for both internal and regional reporting purposes and for preparing Notes to the Financial Statements during the year end audit process.  The incumbent is also responsible for reconciling inter-entity receivables and payables and for preparing Capital Asset and Investment adjusting entries and financial reporting. 

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Balance Sheet Account Management

Balance Sheet Analysis:

-          Assists with variance analysis and explanations

-          Follows up with finance staff and cost centre managers for variance explanations

Balance Sheet preparation and reporting:

-          Prepares monthly balance sheets from general ledger download and modifies rollups for reporting purposes

-          Prepares special ad-hoc analysis as required

Balance Sheet Consolidation:

-          Reviews opening balance sheet entries

-          Prepares adjusting journal entries

Balance Sheet Notes:

-          Assists with the collection of information used in the preparation of the finance statements

 

Capital Asset Report Management

Deferred Contribution Accounting:

-          Prepares deferred contribution reconciliation schedules to assist in the preparation of notes to the financial statements

Net Asset Accounting:

-          Reconciles transactions and creates working papers for internally restricted, unrestricted, and investment in capital asset categories of net assets

Capital Asset Continuity Schedule:

-          Maintains capital asset continuity schedule and reconciles with deferred contributions and investment in capital assets

Capital Asset Account Management:

-          Reviews net change in capital asset accounts each month

-          Verifies equivalence of amortization of deferred contributions and amortization of capital assets

Health Authority (HA) Inter-Company Account Management:

-          Reconciles monthly, non-payroll inter-company accounts

-          Follows up unreconciled differences with (HA) Finance

Other duties and preferred assets:

-          Assists with the delivery of education sessions given by the Finance Division

-          Assists in training new staff

-          Adheres to all safety and health regulations and safe work practices

4.  EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education

o   Complete high school education, Provincial & Territorial  standards, required

o   Intermediate standing in a recognized professional accounting program or a diploma from a recognized business college required

o   An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Experience

o   Minimum 3 years experience within the last 5 years in a computerized accounting environment, preferably within a large, complex organization (hospital or equivalent)

o   Demonstrated proficiency in the use of networked Windows-based systems including spread sheet, database and word processing application (Excel, Access, Word)

o   Must have excellent communication skills (oral and written) in the English language

o   Must have the ability to work independently and in a team environment

o   Ability to analyze, organize and document procedural routines

o   Must have excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication (verbal and written) skills and problem solving abilities and the initiative to follow through on matters independently

o   Must have the ability to use discretion and tact when providing information and/or referring questions as appropriate within the Centre or to outside agencies

o   Must be able to work effectively under stress and meet deadlines

o   Must demonstrate and maintain the strictest confidence in dealing with highly sensitive information

o   Ability to act with initiative, judgment, tact and diplomacy is essential

o   Other related duties as assigned
